No really, wtf?

So get this, Sundays used to be these awesomely slow and lazy things just a few months ago. I’d wake up and then fall asleep and basically do this for a while. And then there’d be much wrestling with the dog and pillows, hours spent taking a dump while making stupid ipod playlists, cracking jokes about how boring my folks were (with my folks), and TV. Oh then I’d go with the driver to buy meat around the afternoon, then I’d cook the meat and then dog and I would eat it sitting in the balcony under the stars. Then I’d brush my teeth and floss and make a real night out of it and fall asleep listening to some music with the dog sleeping between my legs or over my head.

AND NOW???

First off, no dog! Seriously it’s driving me crazy. Dudes, I miss Cookie!!! It’s the truth! I miss her more than I missed my first girlfriend when she left for Purdue, (that was by far the sappiest relationship I was in.)

I mean I walk like a ghost around Delhi staring at all the nice dogs, somehow keeping myself from stealing one of them. I am one of those pathetic women that stare at babies. It’s sick!

But the brilliant thing is the dogs seem to sniff out my affection for them. The other day, I am standing in my brother’s porch and this awesome Labrador dog jumps over the gate of the house on the other side of the road and runs to me. You should have seen the lady-owner. She was SO jealous!

Slowtumblinglife brushes his teeth at night no more! His giant collection of flavoured floss organised by texture and then thickness lies ignored and completely unused. Really guys, I am neglecting my teeth. Who saw that coming? Huh? Who? I enjoyed flossing man, till my gums bled and my teeth were so smooth further flossing caused sparks to fly out of my mouth.

I’m no more that guy. *sniff*

Then there is thing about living alone. I’m becoming such a housewife. I worry about my clothes losing colour because I left them out in the sun for too long. I line up my glasses, spoons and forks every now and then and take roll-call because I’m convinced my cook is a thieving witch. I buy phenyl and harpic! I get my loos washed every day. I worry when my friends sit on my couch. I insist on using tea coasters. I change sheets. I carry a lunch box. I put leftovers in the fridge. I know where the friggin’ candles are!!! DUDES!!!

And Sundays aren’t the lazy slow motion days they used to be. MAN! Take today for instance. I have office-work to do. I have to go the bank and renew my debit card. I have to buy grocery and milk. I have to give my clothes to the ironing lady. I have to pay the maids their salary. I have to get my car serviced. Swati is visiting; I have to catch up with her. And I have rehearsals for my play. Then I have to meet the hommies and watch a movie, get drunk and go out and have a nice time. I have to ensure the cook makes dinner. BLOODY HELL!!!! I want back my simple existence.

Hmpf.

Oh are you wondering how I found the time to write this? Because, dear reader, things might change around me but slowtumblinglife’s life will forever be inherently tragic.

So last night I broke my middle toe. It’s the most pointless piece of my body. Why do we even have the middle toe? Seriously? So anyway… I can’t drive and I’m stuck at home. It's the worst! That’s the thing.

Conversations With Cookie - Same Old

Me: H-E-Y!!

Cookie: Hi.

Me: Long time, eh?

Cookie: Yeah.

Me: So, what's up?

Cookie: Same old.

Me: Ya?

Cookie: Hmm.

(Ya so basically, I think I am back!)

Cookie: So?

Slowtumblinglife Chale Dilli

I left home and therefore Bihar when I was really tiny. Six years old. And surely a lot of who I am now, comes from the next 12 years that I spent in Naini Tal.

Or does it?

I can’t say. It’s always difficult for me to say exactly who I am; also I have very faint recollections of school.

No. No. There’s absolutely no deliberate attempt at novelty-existentialism there.

I think nobody can answer such questions. First off, who really has the time to think of it? And second, even if you do (strange person!) what can you say. We are all such different people from one day to another and definitely from one year to the next.

Plus can you even begin to go to the next one – why we are the way we are.

Anyway!!

Two years ago I returned home and therefore to Bihar. I’d hardly expected work to take me there, and was given little time to prepare and no choice at all.

Everybody told me it was a great move, the place had great lineage (a continuous string of great managers had worked and emerged from Bihar) and it would offer fabulous opportunities for quick and thorough understanding of my work.

For some reason I was suspicious. Not that the people were lying, what they said was all true, but then it was ALSO BIHAR!!!

Funnily, I was no social butterfly in Delhi. In my last two years I avoided almost everyone there, mostly because I was too busy surviving Delhi School but also because I was becoming an antisocial bastard. But there was always this comfortable option of stepping out and doing whatever you wanted whenever you wanted.

And then suddenly, in August 2007, I found myself in Patna.

In the beginning it was crazy, to say the least.

Living together with my parents after 17 years was fairly tough. I wasn’t used to being told what to do and they didn’t know what exactly to do with me. For the first few months there was nothing we did other than fight and yell at each other.

At work I got this sinking feeling of being immediately written off. With good reason, too! Everyone thought I was just a little bit too soft for a career in sales and especially a stint in Bihar. Plus I was pegged as being too anglicised!

And I was.

In the first week itself, I muttered, “What stupidity is this?” to one of the people who worked for me.

He thought I called him, STUPID. This apparently is horrible, because it was in English. What followed was the most embarrassing face off between me and the organisation; they simply refused to listen to anything I’d say.

I remember sitting in my office with rainwater leaking onto my table; all these people I barely knew sat huddled in the adjacent room. They were not cooperating with me and definitely didn’t have nice things to say about me.

I felt stupid, helpless and like a 23 year old bullied boy. (They were all old married men. With moustaches…)

Of course I hit back and really hard too, said some of the most awful things ever to all of the people. Even made a few of them cry!! It was a real childish thing to do, like blowing up a building to put off the fire.

I think the scientific term for it is ‘dick move.’

Well the people started to behave (and fear me); but they hated me more than anyone else on the planet.

Worse still, the floods came in by late August and business came to a total halt!!

Aaaaaaaargh.

The thing with being antisocial is that it’s a highly efficient way of getting people to be curious about you. However the curiosity soon mutates into mild annoyance and then, briefly, significant hatred.

But the end state is always indifference. Yep, eventually no one will care. At all.

Of course, I found this not in the Book of ALL Rules (And Tips on Winning over Sexy Ladies, or Men: Bonus Edition) we should definitely be born with, but through bitter experience.

Years of neglecting friends, friendships, a relationship and all the other people who cared finally took a toll. So there I was, suddenly caught in a bad place, in a wholly screwed up situation and nobody really bothered

Yeah man, those were bad times.

And then exhibiting a lot of character I decided to face all of my problems. Like a man!

By regularly drowning myself in much Old Monk and filling my lungs with a lot of smoke. It was brilliant fun and led to some fairly memorable times, like breaking into an uncontrollable fit of laughter outside the Sun Temple in Puri, which almost got us arrested.

Of course it was also fairly disgraceful and pathetic. And one winter night in Delhi as I puked onto the lawn at India Gate it finally hit me. “What the hell was I doing here?”

I got back into the car, and this friend of mine I have fancied for the longest time was there. She just rubbed my back and behaved like nothing happened. For some reason it felt like hitting rock bottom. I wish she had just slapped me. I don’t think I have felt more ashamed in my life.

I’m not going to tell you what exactly I did over the following months. I don’t really remember.

But I’ll tell you what happened. I invested time into a friendship at work I think I cherish more than any I have ever had, painstakingly won back the trust of the organisation, convinced them that I wasn’t really the Devil, and made peace with the folks, got back in touch with a few old friends, returned to watching films, found some wonderful music, started writing here, played endlessly with my dog, grew a french beard for a little while, (and looked horrendous.)

I understood my work, and started to enjoy it, and did well there. Which given the challenges, was one of the most satisfying things I have ever done. Oh and I cooked and cooked and cooked. I also, inadvertently, broke someone's heart, for which I am going to hell one of these days!

In my second year I faced some of the roughest times at work because of the worst flooding the state had seen. I rode through that. I had a million cups of the most horrible tea at office and travelled all over Bihar on the worst roads possible, at the oddest hours and stayed in the most obnoxious hotels. I personally sold our products in the market AND really enjoyed doing that.

Much of what I am today is because of the last two years.

Or is it?

I guess it is. Again it’s difficult to say what it is that I am now, and how that’s different from what I was two years ago. I guess it’s like when you are 12 or 13 and you can’t tell how much height you’ve gained because it happens slowly and you look at yourself every day. But then over a year you grow by a foot.

So even though I don’t feel it, I can safely assume much has changed. And now all this must end. And from next month on I’m going to be working in the NCR.

I had always imagined being jubilant and excited about leaving this place and especially for Delhi. Strangely I am not. I’m going to miss bugging my mother, and going for a swim with my father, I’ll miss cooking on Sundays, and having Cookie sleep between my legs or on my pillow, curled around my head. Oh I’ll miss most the efficient laundry and food service at home. I’ll miss knowing and being around Anil, Gopal, Randhir, Rakesh, Avinash and all the other guys at work.

But then I must move out, because there is much to be done and seen beyond here. And if I stay any longer I’ll start to get too comfortable.

Hmm. So as I read back, most of this can be passed off as fairly mundane stuff. Little lives make for small stories. But within those lives these are puffed up to be such epics.

And someday if I get around to making the movies I want to and send the protagonist back to his village for a while only to return stronger and with wisdom pouring out of his nose and ears, they are going to say – THE DIRECTOR OBVIOUSLY DREW ON HIS OWN LIFE TO ADD DEPTH TO HIS HERO.

Man, these journalists, can they not sound so corny?

Conversations with Cookie - Still on the Other Realm

"How Religion is All Knotty - A Short Discourse"

Cookie: For starters, IMHO, Religion has been lying through its holy teeth about getting into Heaven.

*ahem*

I mean think about it, people "will" burn in Hell for killing another person, being racist, or laughing at an autistic kid.

But that's like only nowadays.

4500 years ago, it was fairly courteous to smash through the skull of anyone that touched your stupid raw meal. Nobody cared for autism before, I think, Jim Carrey and Religion happened to endorse and cherish much racist behaviour till like day before yesterday.

Over time the meaning of 'the good life' has been tweaked by our ol' friend Religion.

DIVINE. That's just bloody DIVINE!!

Now we are sending really really good people to Heaven, but our racist, great great great grandfathers who also murdered for fun are already there!

They must totally rag our sorry butts!

And what next? Our children will have to be pacifist - fruitarians who send no SPAM messages, before they make the cut??

They will not last a day in "Heaven!"

Shit MAAAAN!!! Religion is FISHY business!

LATER

Me: I don't get what's so sacred about fucking Tuesdays??? Every other day we can stuff ourselves with all sorts of animal food. But Tuesdays? NOOOOO.

What's the difference to the damn Chicken?

And God?

Who made these rules anyway??

Cookie: That's a good point.

Me: And I mean how did anyone decide which was the first Monday? We could have gotten it wrong by a day? So that all Tuesdays are actually Wednesdays.

Cookie: That's a VERY good point.

MUCH LATER

Cookie: Psssst. He can be intelligent. Sometimes. On good days.

Conversations with Cookie - Move It! Move It!

Cookie: So I was just doing my thing and being an excellent dude when it struck me!

Me: What?

Cookie: That I'd live only about 10 years; 14 if I go easy on the red meat and do some Yoga.

Me: So?

Cookie: I don't know. You guys live to at be least 70... It's unfair at some level. You can be totally mundane for a few months or even years. But I can't. Because that would be like a friggin' dog-decade.

My life needs to be a constant yarn of interesting conversations, glorious achievement and the WILDEST sex!

Me: What are you going to do about this sudden realization?

Cookie: I don't know. There's no time to think. I have no time P-E-O-P-L-E!

LATER

Cookie: Shit MAAAN! Dogs were never meant to do a Phd!

STILL LATER

Cookie: If we were the Humans, Phds would take two years. And there'd be no time for unnecessary wooing before sexing up random HOT strangers.

WAIT - I have no time for this wishful thinking. MAAAN.

Conversations with Cookie: Out of the White

Me: So, what do you think?

Cookie: It works.

Me: Huh? "It works??!"

Cookie: Ya. It works. Why, what do you want me to say??

Me: I dunno..

Cookie: What?

Me: Something..

Cookie: Okay. Umm.. Your creativity ruptures in a single uniquely elegant stroke the very rationality of modern-BLOG design? Its powerful colours are a simulating sensorial experience? OR - should I declare "Look here, this is it, there's ART here!!"

Me: You cou..

Conversations With Cookie - On the Other Realm

"Necessary Conditions for the Existence of this Heaven Place"

Cookie: What's the big deal with Heaven, anyway?

Me: Across cultures and all through history it's described as some type of peaceful life after death. A place of happiness, sometimes eternal happiness.

Cookie: Okay. And where exactly is "Heaven?"

Me: Popular view is that it exists as a place over the clouds and that God is above, watching over man.

Cookie: Like a physical place?

Me: Um..

Cookie: That would be friggin' brilliant though! Right? You could be a bum all your life and then "technology" could take you there!! In your face, GOD!!!

Me: I don't think that's how it works. It's..

Cookie: Say, Heaven must have existed forever right? Before religion and all?

Me: I guess, yes. That sounds fair.

Cookie: You know, suddenly, I don't have a good feeling about this. I mean it's difficult to believe there's this place floating above our heads, just like that. And it's big enough for every person ever, the ALL-TIME cumululative total population of the planet through history. Which is nearly 145 billion people plus a lot of dogs.

Swine Flu - The Indian Response

Most of you are either back from work, getting ready for work or are at work. (Whatay wonderful life!) Unless of course you are reading this on a weekend, in which case you have either just woken up, or going back to sleep or horribly drunk.

In the midst of this demanding life you may have missed the outbreak of Swine Flu in Mexico.

The WHO has been quick to take action and called it a “PANDEMIC” hoping that this will shame the virus to death. Of course it will be disgustingly lame and go on and on about how it’s done this for the first time in four decades!

Next they plan to rename the flu the North American Influenza, because everyone knows that naming a damn virus after its geographical origin is equivalent to letting it know that we think it’s totally gay. And who is scared of homosexual viruses? Again the WHO is optimistic of humiliating the bugs till they have no choice but to commit suicide.

Thank you WHO, for being so friggin’ awesome, no really. Please also let everyone know how there is only enough TamiFlu to save about five dozen of us.

The WHO is also currently building an ark.

Of course the WHO is not the only one with silly etymological concerns. Cookie questions the liberties we take when we name all the bad things using animal names. “Swine” Flu. “Dog’s” Life. “Cats”.

Anyway, in a few days the shit will really hit Indian shores.

Things will start with an innocuous SMS Poll on India TV.

Do you think you have Swine Flu? SMS SWINE Y or SWINE N to 588888. (Standard Rates Apply.)

In a few hours –

B-R-E-A-K-I-N-G NEWS!!!! Swine Flu; now also in India.

Within minutes a feisty Barkha Dutt will be seen dawdling around the Gateway of India. As a demonstration of her brand of hard-hitting, courageous and intelligent journalism, she will insist on not wearing a mask and resort to needless and fanatical yelling.

Then there will be a five minute clip of her staring with utmost concentration at the Arabian Sea.

Not to be left behind CNN-IBN will organise a chat show inviting the usual suspects.

1. Preity Zinta, who will be wearing over sized goggles and a dress that slips down a bit every time she raises her arms to make a passionate, although asinine, point.

2. Mohd. Azharuddin, looking typically shameless. Smiling and waving at the audiences who are actually spitting on him.

3. Amar Singh Ji, because it’s a chat-show.

4. Random Expert on Subject, who will be completely ignored right till the end, when he will be thrown one question and given exactly 60 seconds to give his inputs before being rudely told, “Sorry, I have to cut you there!” And immediately we break into an Amul Macho ad, “Yeh toh bada TOIIIINNG hai!”

5. Maneka Gandhi, for variety, because she will talk about how it’s cruel to kill the virus. And also what it means to be a Mother.

The Hindi Channels will all basically do the same thing. Angry bearded reporters will bark into their mikes from everywhere. On that day they will blame Swine Flu for everything, sad faces, no electricity, pollution, global warming and bad roads.

More SMS Polls will follow –

Do you still have Swine Flu?
Will you have Swine Flu next summer?
Are you worried about Swine Flu?
Is the government doing enough for You?
Do you know how to cure Swine Flu?

SMS Y or N to 588888.

A ticker will appear for people to leave emergency messages for their families. It will be unedited because every now and then you will read, “Hi Smriti, I LOVE YOU! Forever Only Tumhara, Sonu”.

Soon Astrologers and Tarot Card readers will be deployed. Patriotic by nature, they will, like always, construct a situation whereby in the end India will regain total supremacy of the world!

Mahesh Bhatt will speak over the phone and express his angst in a strange mix of Urdu and English across all 13 ‘major’ Hindi News Channels.

In the real world, our PM will rush to Sonia Gandhi’s residence for ‘discussion’. Sonia Gandhi will listen to her inner voice and therefore do nothing. Rahul Gandhi, full of youthful energy, and equipped with the titanic luxury of being a Gandhi and hence truly capable of single-handedly doing much, will exercise his ENTIRE MIGHT to safeguard every single person from the flu, in Amethi. And then fail, miserably, because the Congress does not form the State Government. Then he will cry about it.

Priyanka Gandhi will tell everyone that her nose is like Indira Gandhi’s.

No one will pay any attention to Robert Vadera.

Shri LK Advani the spirited octogenarian and the Leader of the Opposition will in effect call the PM a total pansy and then RAM say that if TEMPLE the BJP was in power it would BUILD take a more decisive stance.

The Left will cite the origin in Mexico as a clear validation of its Anti-American stance. They will elicit almost as much response as Robert Vadera.

Mayawati will demand 50% Reservation Quota for Swine Flu. Educated Indians will cringe and then not bother to vote against our future PM.

A 5th Front will emerge to woo the niche voter who is swayed only by Swine Flu concerns. This front will have exactly the same members as the 3rd and 4th Fronts and will also claim a sure win over 180 seats.

Psephologists the world over (only about three) will be stumped because sure-win claims would then total 1,750 for only about 525 seats.

Not one to miss out on the action, Ram Gopal Verma will announce a movie, with a customary gritty title; Sooar, Saale (starring: Vivek Oberoi), an intricate underworld drama with Swine Flu killing people in the background. Anil Kapoor will just go on and on about the friggin’ Oscars. Aamir Khan will appear in an advertisement to spread awareness, BUT ONLY if one of his movies is releasing in the same week.

In the midst of all this nonsense, Kalki Koechlin will continue to look AWESOME!

Lalit Modi and the entire star cast of IPL-II will be banned from returning to India because of travel restrictions. Before we can all celebrate Mr. Modi will use this as the perfect opportunity to immediately kick start IPL-III.

In the final analysis more people might die from the ensuing mind numbing boredom than from the global influenza.

So that’s that. DO NOT IGNORE THIS! Send it to at least 6 Friends and save their LIVES.

Alternatively save your self from 6 continuous years of bad luck.

Conversations with Cookie - Battle of the Species

"Finding Out Who Kicks Whose Butt Day"

Me: Done?

Cookie: Done. Dude, dogs kick human butts, like so hard!!

Me: We'll see about that... Shoot!

Cookie: In the US alone ferocious Rottweilers kill upto a dozen people every year!!

ehehehehee!!!

Me: In Malaysia they have a festival delicacy during the Gawai (harvest day). It's called "Pekasam Semalam" - basically they stuff their dogs with whatever grain they were harvesting through the day.

The next day, brutal as it may sound, they make the dogs purge and barf everything they were earlier fed; swinging them in circles by the tail. And then they collect the dog vomit and serve with salt. Of course there's also rice wine!!

Cookie: SHIT MAAAAAN!!!

Conversations with Cookie - On Earth Day

Cookie: Humans are such rotten animals! Yesterday I was watching that Inconvenient Truth movie and it made me so angry I could totally kill someone.

Me: Earth Day? It's so lame man, like all they can come up with is Gore.

Cookie: I Know!! Hmm.. Anyway!! How do you justify the criminal imbalance between what humans give to this planet and what they take away? How are you going to even begin to explain all this pollution to your kids?

Me: I don't know... I guess, who needs the wilderness if you have lots more ice cream, free music and Call of Duty XXI?

Cookie: Don't reduce everything to frivolous humour. It's our PLANET! We have only ONE! CO2 levels are the highest in 650,000 years. The 10 hottest ever years were all in the last 14!!!! There is a strong chance that a major ice sheet in Greenland or in West Antarctica will collapse in this decade! Either of which would raise global sea levels by over 20 feet, flooding coastal areas and creating 100 million fresh refugees!!!!

Me: Okay...

Cookie: If I were human, I'd stop worrying about the economy.

Me: But..

Cookie: You serve no real purpose on this planet. You have your fancy cars, and your fancy jobs and your bizarre and pointless space exploration and fucking stupid Bono. But to make your own lives comfortable and interesting you pollute. Like PIGS!!!

Me: Calm d...

Cookie: No!!!!

Me: O..

Cookie: FOR ONCE YOU SHOULD WORRY ABOUT SOME REAL PROBLEMS!!!!

Me: Like??

Cookie: Take for instance the fact that when the automobile driver uses his car, in effect, he saves a certain quantity of energy by not walking. The energy provided by food is then stored in the form of fats. As the driver accumulates fat (energy), the automobile wastes fossil fuel (energy). The automobile could in fact acquire its energy directly from the driver, solving at once, obesity, pollution and the energy crisis. An intimate reciprocity between man and machine. That is ALL you should think about.

Me: You are right, you know.

Cookie: I know.

Me: Say, how do you justify being a pet? All you do is rob the world of much livestock, cheese and mango... You do recollect, the Wikipedia page from last week? Your particular breed of dog, The Samoyed, is known for a loud bark, and hold your breath, a wide smile. And that most Samoyeds wont even make good sheep dogs because after a while the sheep lose total respect for err, a smiling dog. I think I'm going to get a pet I can eventually eat. An intimate reciprocity..

Conversations with Cookie - On Wanting to Explode (Ok, Go Off)

Me: I wish I was a neutron bomb, for once I could explode,
I wish I was a sacrifice but somehow still lived on…

Cookie: “go off”

Me: I wish I was a sentimenta… Huh?

Cookie: It’s “go off”. I wish I was a neutron bomb, for once I could go off.

Me: Yeah, whatever.

Cookie: It’s a shame Pearl Jam was once accused of being a synthetic grunge band, now they seem as organic and principled a rock band as any. I love that they play every show like it’s the last.

Me: I only listen to Wishlist.

Cookie: I have more, totally valuable opinions on Portishead, Yann Tiersen, Dylan and of course your recent love, Mogwai.

Me: STOP GOING THROUGH MY IPOD?!!!!

Cookie: I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me
I wish I was a messenger and all the
news was good…

Cookie: I’d make a supercool groupie. I just know it... *sigh*

Conversations with Cookie - On Being a Dog (Why it Sucks, Sometimes)

Cookie: Do you have an ALL-TIME favourite person?

Me: Mm Hmm.

Cookie: No?

Me: No.

Cookie: Okay.

Cookie: Canis Familiaris. Cookie Canis Lupus Familiaris is my name, hereby and herewith. A lover of cheese, mango and all types of meat. Also, avante-garde philosopher. The flamboyant symbol of the angst-ridden yet thinking Modern Dog. And in her spare time, a beacon of global peace and hope.

Cookie: Phew.

Me: Yes.

Cookie: Anyway, I have had enough of you and others of your ilk. I don't care whether you say anything or not.

Cookie: What I do care about is Beetroots.

Cookie: Beta Vulgaris. (Vulgaris, ehehehehee) Beetroot can be peeled, steamed, and then eaten warm with butter as a delicacy; cooked, pickled, and then eaten cold as a condiment; or peeled, shredded raw, and then eaten as a salad. The Romans used beetroot as a treatment for debilitating constipation, and also as an aphrodisiac. Which makes this humble root a kinky resident of the culinary world. Its use also threw up the phrase, 'take favours in the beetroot field' which hints at visiting prostitutes. Betacyanin in beetroot may cause red urine in some people who are unable to break it down. This is called beeturia. (Red urine, ehehehehee)

Me: Yeah I know. I love you too.

Cookie: Go to the beetroot fields.. For all of your life!!

Conversations with Cookie - On Giving it Those Ones

Cookie: So how come you never posted this weekend?

Me: Um. I was busy..

Cookie: You were watching FRIENDS!! (Could he be more lame?) And then you bloody slept for four hours in the evening. And you didn't even cook...

Me: Huh? Well. Well, I couldn't think of anything worthwhile after The Countdown. In fact I can't think at all. And I have run out of books. There isn't any new music. And it's too hot.

Cookie: I know what you mean, though. Writing is like that. Comes and goes. Everything that's lovely is but a brief, dreamy kind delight. Aah. Yeats...

Me: Um. Hmm.

Cookie: What are you typing? Are you using this for a post?

Me: No, I'm sending a letter.

Cookie: I could have said something more worthwhile if you said you were..

Conversations With Cookie - On the Next Life

Me: Say who would you want to be in your next life?

Cookie: Who me? Oh I have it all figured out. A Great White Shark!

Me: Pray, tell me, why?

Cookie: Dude??! It's the Great White Shark!!! I go from being fed to feeding on HUMANS!!!! MUHAHAHA MUHAHA-HAHAHA-HEE-HEE-HAHAHAHA

Me: Geez, for a dog, you have considerable angst. God is listening! You'll be nothing more than a Tape Worm.

Cookie: Huh? Yeah, I'm sure that's how it works. But sometimes he's known to cooperate. I know this leech who wanted to be a weasel in his next life.

Me: Who?

Conversations with Cookie - On Pavlovian Conditioning

Cookie: Anyway, I have had enough of that stupid kid that’s just moved in next to us. The runt insists on playing just outside our door.

Me: Why does it bother you so much?

Cookie: Well, it’s a Pavlovian thing.

Me: Explain..

Cookie: You don’t get dogs! Any sound near the house has to be answered with crazy barks and a feral advance.

Me: Well, can’t you recondition your instincts?

Cookie: No?!!

Me: Why??

Cookie: For the same reason you can’t stop writing sappy stuff like 2047.

Me: Oh you wretched nasty dog! Just you wait… An hour every morning and evening with the savage apartment-kids shall set you right…

Cookie: No? No!! Please!!! They are crazy! They want me to fetch stuff.

Conversations With Cookie - The Grass is Greener on the Other Side

Me: My life defies meaning. You have it so much easier!

Cookie: Why?

Me: Is that a question? You are a dog. You have no responsibilities. You are fed. You potty in the open and others clean up after you. I have to work. Somedays I like it, somedays I don't, most days I can't tell. I may have a family soon and then my life and freedom will be chained in all sorts of responsibilities. If I don't have a family, I'll feel even worse. Society will laugh at me. No one expects you to do anything, you just have to exist. And people care for you simply because you have a tail and a high propensity to lick us when we are feeling low.

Cookie: Somedays I want to have pasta instead of ruddy Pedigree. And pottying in the open is your idea of freedom? I'd be willing to slave as a stupid librarian for pasta and a little privacy.

Me: You dont get it.

Cookie: Stop whining ALL the time!

Me: We'll see who whines when there will be no cheese falling from the dinner table. Stupid Dog!

Cookie: *wags tail*

Bloggy Love

I don't know how it is with other bloggers, but in my case nothing makes my day like a sudden spurt in traffic. And yet I do fairly little to actually take this blog to people. Or I do a lot with a few people, those I think I can bug and get away with, and nothing otherwise.

So you can understand, my total delight when I received this award by Adaelamoon over at Ruminations. Oh and she wrote some fine things about this place. Do visit her blog, it's only a month old but already there's much terrific stuff to be read.

And, now it's my turn to spread some Bloggy Love -

1. BLIMBLOP - Her first post was the very epitome of profound brevity. "Yada Yada Yada," she said. And then the women just wouldn't stop talking. She'd write two posts between lunch and dinner, and one just before she slept. And they were all brilliant. Her blog is mostly about lizards, Bombay, her office, and Rats. Its perfect. Do visit. Leave her a string of curses for not writing often enough lately, even though she is now the somewhat proud owner of a laptop. (She took six months to decide on buying one, six months to decide the model and then three months to go to the store.)

2. Balls On A Rampage - A Dystopian Take on Life - Uddhav will go down in history as the man who downloaded all of Cinema. Also, before I met him, people who followed their dreams were only characters in books. When you get to know him you will know what I mean and you will admire him for that. What I like most about his blog, is the honesty. It stares you in the face. I wish someday I could match him there.

3. The Delhicate Constitution - On some blog somewhere, he is listed under Too Kewl to Blog Anymore. Which is true, he is fairly busy these days. But go there, he has been blogging for years, and you can pick any random post to read and you'll love it. Plus he has a list of awesome Blogs which I use every other day.

4. No Longer the Elastic Retreat - A New Chapter - I just visited this a few weeks ago, but its a brilliant blog. Found it on my aimless meanderings across the internet. And now I go there fairly often, just trying to finish reading his previous posts.

5.
Autobiography of An Ordinary Man - Another blog I chanced upon. You must read his posts, they are more hilarious than anything else I have read in a long time. And he writes really often.

6. Donscave - The Don - he once kept his stuff private, then I abused the shit out of him, now you can visit. It's really an incredible collection of posts, that takes you through his life. Now if only he'd write more often.

So that's that. Hope this will increase the quality of you life online.

Oh and consider yourself awarded the Superior Scribbler Award by your very own Slowtumblinglife. You are supposed to pass this on and all, but all's cool if you don't.

If this doesn't make you feel too awesome, let me just tell you that I spent Sunday doing brilliant things like having Malted Chocolate Fudge ice cream, then cutting my toenails, I saved them from last Sunday when I cut my fingernails (what planning), then I cut Cookie's toenails (all of them), and now I am waiting for Roadies to start. Oh I also had a routine Blood Test, just for kicks (almost).

It's an honour, just to know me? Aww.

Boredom Wrote This

I woke up this morning and the first thought I had was that it had been two days since I brushed my teeth. Then Cookie jumped onto my chest and wagged her stupid tail.

In between the lungful of foul breath and dim-witted dog I was thinking; there is a limit to how many mornings a man can take of getting up with nothing to do. I was feeling so useless, it hurt a little bit.

WARNING: Excessive Boredom can cause your Head to Explode!!!

Anyway, I grabbed the newspaper.

I wish the papers had an infinite amount of news, followed by page after page of celebrity gossip and finally an endless gallery of gloriously intelligent women with brilliant boobs. Okay, okay I get that most people lead these really busy and kickass-grade awesome lives, (or so they tell themselves) and therefore have no time to briefly glance over more than 16 pages of news.

But there IS a market out there for The Infinite Times. ME!!! I am all for a newspaper that takes a full day to read, making it impossible to run out of things to do.

Just so that you know, I’m actually the epitome of dental hygiene and also the International Face (teeth?) of Oral Care for Patna. Oh well, I was the obvious choice, apart from owning the only electric toothbrush in the city I am also the only person, who knows how to, and does actually floss in Patna.

Sometimes I do such a fine job of brushing at night; I wake up with teeth so sparkling it’d be a shame to clean them immediately. The respectful thing to do would be to wait till after breakfast. But then some days I forget about it.

And so yesterday I had planned an epic, larger-than-life, post-dinner oral experience. It would begin with an elaborate fifteen minute session of power-flossing, which is basically normal flossing rigrously continued, till there is considerable bleeding. This would be followed by a two minute session of thorough tongue cleaning, ending in a coat of toothpaste (Colgate Active Salt) left on the tongue to destroy any remnant bacteria. Then a round of scrupulous brushing (toothpaste: Meswak, for variety and hence motivation). To end things on a high-note I designed a shorter second session of nuanced flossing and finally a gargle with industrial strength mouthwash.

You will never have to visit a dentist if you follow the above, and you will also be unanimously declared the most boring person alive. But then that’s a small price to pay. Also, a small warning, all this effort can make you hungry and you might feel mildly stupid if that were to happen.

So, anyway, I had it all planned and everything, but I fell asleep before dinner even.

***

If early man was never hungry he’d just have stayed back in his cave and led a life of intense sexual debauchery and passionate laziness. We would all be early men still! Now it’s debatable whether we’d be happier than we are now. I mean a life without any progress and hence no antibiotics or ipods can be painful, but at the same time there would be total absence of a lot of the evils of modern society - religion, clothes, wars, economic depression, Paris Hilton. I think it’s a profound question, beyond the scope of this blog. Maybe you the astute reader of this fascinating online journal could share some thoughts on this.

God’s a smart cookie that way, he could’ve made us without stomachs and with solar panels on our backs and ultra efficient wind turbines for ears but instead he forced us to move our asses by giving us an appetite. With that thought, I entered the kitchen, hoping it would give me something to do.

Severe boredom on its own can push man to accomplish much, but if it happens along with acute laziness then it’s a bit like stagflation, wholly unproductive.

So anyway, I didn’t feel like toiling over flavoured mashed potatoes or spicy mutton curry. Instead I just made some stupid masala to sprinkle over tea, to make my morning chai maid-proof. That woman has an honorary doctorate in the techniques and intent of turning tea into poison.

My home’s not exactly the repository of remarkable things to do. I mean the folks are awesome and Cookie is a whole lot of fun, but they sleep way too much to be of any real entertainment value. So I headed to work, on a Saturday!!

Desperate times can push a man to do the unthinkable, in my case, striking a conversation with my driver.

Prem Nath (Love God)! Hah, and you thought drivers were always called insipid names like Dubey or Choubey or simply Driver.

Now Prem Nath is no ordinary driver, he is a man of profound depth. He is a meek, deadpan depressed sort of fellow, no one has ever caught him without a frown or heard him speak beyond a few words and his first wife eloped with another man soon after the wedding.

But there's a colourful side to him; he paints his nails red and immediately married a second woman who the maid says is way prettier than the first one. Almost like saying, take that bitch! Except, like Droopy, Prem Nath would say it cheerlessly.

He is a dreamer; if I don’t tell Prem Nath to turn left for office; I run the danger of finding myself in another city. Sometimes he will just slow down the car and be oblivious to the subsequent violent honking and middle fingers. You have to poke him gently out of his abstractions, and he will respond by travelling faster than light and jumping all signals.

So anyway, I thought I’d talk to him.

Me (the God of Small Talk): What’s with the traffic? Is there a rally?
No Reply, my employer ego deeply hurt but not badly enough to forgo experiment.
Me (the Saint of Never-Give-Inn): I think there is… Prem Nath??
Prem Nath: (with disdain and mostly to himself): There seems to be a jam, hence all the cars.
There is a pause in the Universe; then the thunderous vibration of his philosophical account makes the car wobble a bit.
Me (shaken and stirred): Oh.

When you come to work on Saturday only to repel boredom there is a high chance of failure. But then what are blogs for?

HTML [0] Design Genius [1] Punjab Mail [3.5] – Part I

Most people, who get weekends off, take weekends off. I’m not one of them; I’ve been to work every Saturday of my career, plus two Sundays and one Labour Day. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no workaholic, I am at my desk on Saturdays, well, for no clear reason.

Anyway, I just took this Saturday off. There was general celebration in the house; my mother drew a long list of items that had to be pulled out of the lofts. Sometimes I think my mother loves me only because I am tall. My dad smiled wickedly, finally a day to take me to the bank, and get me to finish the boring paperwork for some thing that has now been pending for more than a year. Cookie was happy too; she thought maybe I will cook lamb curry on both Saturday and Sunday.

Hah... They were all wrong. I haven’t taken my eyes off the computer for the entire weekend now. Except of course to sleep and go the loo and to do other absolutely essential things like picking up my eyeballs when they popped out from the strain of staring at the screen for seven straight hours. My head is so full of pixels, textures, vectors, Photoshop, HTML, CSS, error messages and low virtual memory!!!

But, here it is, the result of two straight days of tweaking the blog, through countless online HTML tutorials and design freebies… My blog is now completely free of the stupid restrictions that come with every Google template, I control the colour and texture of every pixel, I decide the padding and margin of every header and widget, in short I am monarch of all YOU currently survey. My blog is now, finally, well… mine.

I would like to thank
this gentleman and these guys without whose profound wisdom and infinite largesse none of this would have been possible. Also due credit must be given to my mother for getting the driver to empty the lofts, making this weekend’s lamb curry, supplying me with endless rounds of chai, coffee and even cold drink (for which I had to eat Chyawanprash at night.) Mother’s bargain well!!! Also the maid, who agreed, rather reluctantly, to not sweep or clean the computer-side of my room, this was necessary since the process takes her no less than half a day and generally involves her randomly disconnecting the entire computer and threatening its very existence. My dad for, as usual, getting the paper work done all by himself. And last but not the least, Cookie, my dear dog, the time this took was actually meant for her. Definitely two curries next weekend!

Ladies and Gentlemen, ‘the’ slowtumblinglife takes immense pleasure in presenting to you the new look of “The Write for the Remaining Silence”.

Thank you!! Thank you!! You are all very kind! Thank you..

Autographs? No No.. Well, only this one time..

Thank YOU!!!

Initial response seems mixed.
Don felt that even though the main header image was ‘singularly engaging and powerful’ the colours were ‘earthen, dull and depressing.’ Well, the blog features a lot of Bihar (earthen), and me (dull and depressing.) Maybe I will use shades of orange and red when I finally move to Delhi or become a film director or both.

BLIMBLOP felt that I should concentrate on the content and not fool readers with blank posts like the last one. And that only ‘losers’ spend weekends designing blogs. And my heart broke completely when she said she liked what she saw of the blog last morning. By that time I had just changed the font of the date header; and the rest of the blog was more or less splattered with the message ‘this image has been removed by the author.’

Anyway, so this is the blog. Feel free to tell me what you think of it.

And I promise not to change the layout for at least a year. But, who can tell, I think I love playing around with obscure textures, vectors and fonts on Photoshop. Maybe, I will take more Saturdays off; finally there is something to do, even in Patna.

POSTSCRIPT - Seems like HTML sneaked in a slimy late equalizer. The wonderful background shade (that hopefully you can now see) was invisible on every computer other than the one at home. This also explains Don's violent suggestion to change the color-scheme. Any way it has been settled now. Enjoy!

Existence Conditions for Time-Travel. Formulated on the Delhi Metro, documented on my terrace under the stars with my dog sleeping at my feet.

Some days ago the papers informed me that two German gentlemen had discovered photons that travelled faster than light. My memory tells me that time travel is possible if one could travel faster than light, ofcourse one might find that cosmic strings, black holes and/or warp drives might come in handy in one's endeavour.

What does it mean to travel in time? What would one do if it were posible to go into the future? Or the past?? I looked at my watch - it read 10.11 AM then; in about half an hour I'd be in Dwarka. Too little time to completely analyse questions of such importance, I thought.

But half an hour was sufficient to lay down the basic requirements essential for time travel. The rest I left to people on overnight train journeys.

Hmm - technically if time travel was possible then it means at this point of time, 11:18:37...38...39...PM I could travel to say 08:00 AM tomorrow morning or to 07:00 PM tonight. To travel to these two separate 'times' they must exist now ie 11:19:03...04...05...

So for time travel to exist there must exist all times - A separate parallel universe for every unit of time that has occurred or will occur.

But then what happens if I go into my past and kill myself? So travelling into the past could throw up a paradox that violates causality. In which case we do away with the possibility of travelling into the past. CAUSALITY CANNOT BE VIOLATED, EVER! Though certain experiments have proved otherwise.

So we are left with the possibility of travelling into the future.

I remember by the time I got off the Metro that day I had it all figured out in my head. I turn to Miles Davis as I try and recollect my mental work from that trip - my dog (Cookie) is having some sort of a dream. Her eyes are half open as she sleeps and every now and then she jerks her left leg and then draws an imaginary circle in the air with her paw. As you see, the setting is perfect for the following -

Now a basic requirement for travelling into the future would be that it should take lesser time than it would in reality ie I should travel from 2007 to 2010 in less than three years. Like all good economists im tackling the most basic requirement first.

So say Im on my way to Dwarka and am presently at Rajiv chowk - if I were to travel 15 mins. in the future, where would I be? You could say I would be near Rajouri Garden, still in the metro. But in the 15 mins. that elapsed I could have gotten off two station before Rajouri Garden and taken a train back to Rajiv Chowk, or I could have waited at that station staring at my feet or if I felt like I could have left the station all together and could be counting the no. of white cars that I saw pass by me, or maybe black. What I am attempting to say is that in 15 mins. time I could be at many different places doing many different things. So if I were to travel to 15 mins. in the future I could be at any such place doing any such thing.

So to begin with for each unit of time in the future there must exist as many parallel universes as there are possibilities. As time 'passes' these possibilities get narrowed down to what actually has occurred.

Coming back to me being in Rajiv Chowk in the Metro. Say travelling 15 minutes into the future I find myself still in the metro, at Rajouri Garden. Everyone who was with me in the Metro at Rajiv Chowk is still with me, Have they travelled time as well? I guess not. So basically im in another universe that always existed. The others are actually 15 minutes ago (it is getting difficult to maintain grammatical standards.) But actually only about 10 seconds have elapsed, so I can't be at a particular time - I am at a particular place that exists for a particular time. it is not the unique place for that time. As many places exist for that time as are required to accomodate every possibility in the universe, everybody else who could have travelled time and so on.

Miles Davis is getting groovier and Cookie's dream has turned more violent it seems.

Now that I am where I am. A place that is located 15 minutes into the future but is only 10 seconds away in real time. I wonder what could be done. technically 10 seconds have passed since the Metro left Rajiv Chowk. I am 15 minutes into the future, but even 10 minutes after the train pulled out of Rajiv Choek is 'future' for me because in reality only ten (okay 88) seconds have passed yet. So if my time travel gadget travelled with me I could go to ten minutes after the train left Rajiv Chowk from being present in some universe where 15 minutes had elapsed since the train left Rajiv Chowk.

But this doesnt mean I have travelled in the past. It only means I am travelling back in my available future. From 2007 I could go to 2100 spend a year with my great grand children and then go to 2010. The only year I can't go to is 2008 because it has passed. And I wasn't there. You could say that when I went to 2010 then I could kill myself and m visit to my great grandchildren in 2100 would violate causality. But that is an incorrect conclusion. Actually 2010 hadn't occured, when I was in 2100..........................
..................."The next station is Dwarka Sector ...." I remember. It was 11:07 then - surely it didnt seem like it had been 50 mins since I got on at Rajiv Chowk - certainly there are better ways of spending a long ardous Metro ride. Ways that might involve a pretty girl and a great conversation. This is one.

PS: But I promise as I got off the Metro that day, I had it all figured out, all the necessary conditions for time-travel. Just didnt put them together, saving it for another such ride.

Cookie is awake now. Both of us are staring at the sky, imagining the infinite possibilities that the universe holds. In another world Cookie could still be having a bad dream.
